The Kaffir Express_Isigidimi sama Xosa
1870 - 1888
The Kaffir Express was a bilingual 'magazine' and the isiXhosa section was titled Isigidimi Sama Xhosa - The Xhosa Messenger. With the interest of Lovedale's principal, James Stewart, the paper carved out its own purpose, which was to "to supply a monthly or weekly sheet, such as will gradually induce the habit of reading, and make it both a taste and necessity and thus serve as an education in the wider sense of the word" (Couzens, 1976: 6). The Kaffir Express changed its name to The Christian Express.
